1. Project Overview & Objectives
"Punchi Hadawathe Awurudu" was a culturally enriching community service project organized by the Leo Lions Club of Colombo Uptown Eminence to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The primary objective was to bring the joy, warmth, and traditions of the festive season to approximately 25 foster children at the Lawris Childrens' Home in Colombo 10. The initiative was designed to foster a sense of belonging, uplift the spirits of institutionalized youth, and ensure they were not left out of the national cultural celebrations.
2. Execution & Activities
The project was executed at the Lawris Childrens' Home and was uniquely structured to provide a full morning of celebration and engagement. The core activities included:
- Festive Meals: The event commenced with a warm, high-quality breakfast provided to all the children, later followed by a special ice cream treat to maintain the festive atmosphere.
- Interactive Awurudu Games: Club members organized and facilitated a series of fun, inclusive games, including musical chairs ("singing chairs") and balloon bursting, specifically chosen to encourage participation and laughter.
- Gift Distribution: The morning concluded with the distribution of special gifts to the children, leaving them with a tangible reminder of the day's joy.
Club members were highly active throughout the event, not just as organizers, but as active participants and facilitators, ensuring every child felt seen and celebrated.
3. Leadership & Participation
The initiative required high-touch, empathetic leadership from the club's members. By coordinating games, managing meal distribution, and directly interacting with the children, the youth volunteers of the club demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. This hands-on engagement bridged the gap between the volunteers and the children, creating an environment of genuine connection and care.
4. Outcome & Impact
The project was a resounding success, delivering a first-of-its-kind Avurudu experience to the Lawris Childrens' Home. By directly engaging approximately 25 foster children, the club successfully broke the monotony of their daily routines, resulting in visible joy and highly positive, valuable feedback directly from the children themselves. Furthermore, the initiative strengthened the club's reputation for delivering not just material aid, but vital emotional and cultural support to marginalized youth.
5. Alignment with Values
"Punchi Hadawathe Awurudu" stands as a prime example of the club’s motto: "Lead. Serve. Uplift." It aligned perfectly with core Leo values by providing Leadership opportunities in event management, delivering Service through provision of meals and gifts, and seizing the Opportunity to deeply Uplift the emotional well-being of vulnerable children during a culturally significant time.
