1. Project Overview & Objectives "Life Beyond Diabetes" was a targeted public health awareness initiative executed by the Leo Lions Club of Colombo Uptown Eminence. The primary objective was to educate the public on diabetes prevention, management, and the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle. The project was designed to combat widespread misinformation, encourage proactive health measures, and demonstrate the club’s commitment to addressing critical global health challenges at the local community level. 2. Execution & Activities The project was executed in the Kelaniya area, focusing on zones with steady public foot traffic to maximize visibility. The core activity centered around a direct community outreach and leaflet distribution campaign. The process included: Designing and printing informative, easy-to-read leaflets covering critical facts about diabetes care and prevention. Mobilizing a team of club volunteers to the Kelaniya area for on-the-ground engagement. Actively approaching pedestrians and community members to hand out approximately 50 leaflets while briefly explaining the importance of the cause. 3. Leadership & Participation This initiative required strong interpersonal and communication skills from the club's members. Rather than passively leaving flyers on a counter, volunteers had to actively engage with the public, breaking the ice and speaking confidently about a serious health issue. This grassroots advocacy effort strengthened the members' public speaking abilities and their confidence in acting as community health ambassadors. 4. Outcome & Impact The project successfully delivered essential health education directly into the hands of the community. By distributing approximately 50 informative leaflets in the Kelaniya area, the club directly prompted individuals to consider their health habits and raised the overall health literacy of those they engaged with. Furthermore, the campaign reinforced the club's alignment with Lions Clubs International’s global fight against diabetes, elevating the club's profile as a serious advocate for public well-being. 5. Alignment with Values "Life Beyond Diabetes" serves as a direct execution of the club’s motto: "Lead. Serve. Uplift." It aligned strongly with core Leo values by providing Leadership opportunities in public advocacy, delivering crucial health Service through education, and seizing the Opportunity to Uplift the community's long-term well-being through preventative awareness.
