Eye Camp at Polgahawela Mahamevna Asapuwa Introduction: The Lions Club of Nugegoda Central has continuously undertaken cataract surgery projects across Sri Lanka as part of its commitment to improving community health. One such successful initiative was organised at the Mahamevna Asapuwa in Polgahawela on the 24th of January 2026, in collaboration with the resident Buddhist monks and the village Dayaka Sabha. People from many nearby towns gathered for the eye screening. When we arrived at around 7.00 am, we were amazed to see the large crowd waiting patiently in a long queue. Many individuals had arrived as early as 11.00 pm the previous night, showing their enthusiasm for this service. This project was made possible through the generous sponsorship of a relative of one of our club members, Lion Ajantha de Zoysa. The sponsor kindly wished to remain anonymous. Under the guidance of our President, Lion Thushara Herath, the project was chaired by Lion Athula Herath and coordinated by Lion Ajantha de Zoysa. A total of 850 people received eye screenings during the program. To ensure the comfort of all participants, breakfast and lunch were provided free of charge. The camp was conducted from 7.00 am to 7.30 pm, with dedicated service from club members and their family members who volunteered throughout the day. In addition to eye examinations, the project also included the distribution of 193 special glasses and 518 reading glasses. Most importantly, 139 patients were identified as requiring cataract surgery. These patients were transported to Ratnapura Nethsetha Hospital in three buses for cataract surgeries conducted on 16th, 17th, and 18th February 2026. The Lions Club ensured that the patients were safely transported to the hospital and returned home after the procedures. Breakfast and lunch were also provided free of charge during this process. This project stands as another meaningful example of the Lions Club of Nugegoda Central’s dedication to serving the community and improving vision for those in need. Conclusion: The Eye Camp at Polgahawela Mahamevna Asapapuwa was a highly successful community service project that brought much-needed eye care to hundreds of people from surrounding areas. Through the dedication of the Lions Club members, volunteers and the generous support of the anonymous sponsor, the project was able to provide screenings, distribute spectacles and identify patients in need of cataract surgery. The effort contributed to improving the vision and quality of life of many individuals in the community. The project was successfully carried out under the guidance of our President, Lion Thushara Herath, with the leadership of Project Chairman Lion Athula Herath and the coordination of Lion Ajantha De Zoysa. Their commitment and teamwork ensured the smooth planning of this meaningful initiative. Reported By: Lion Dilini Gunasekera Club Secretary L/C of Nugegoda Central
