The Lions Club of Nugegoda Legacy commenced a one-year scholarship support programme in August 2026 for two deserving medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. The project is fully funded through a LKR 120,000 donor contribution made in memory of the donor’s late father, who was a medical doctor, and was initiated in August to commemorate his birthday.
Under the programme, each student receives LKR 5,000 per month for 12 months, providing a total monthly assistance of LKR 10,000. The beneficiaries were selected based on genuine financial need, with the support of university contacts and a detailed verification process coordinated by Project Chairperson Lion Lady Renuka Jayamanne. Relevant supporting documents, including Grama Niladhari certification and other identification and financial-background documentation, were reviewed before final selection.
Both beneficiaries were identified as students facing significant family and financial challenges while pursuing medical education. The project aims to provide consistent financial support to help them continue their higher education with greater stability and dignity. On the day of awarding the scholarships we have given them food and transport money as well to assist them.
